In this feature, we hear from Samantha Ramirez, LATAM Payroll Manager at Warner Bros. Discovery Mexico, who shares her journey into the field, the challenges that shaped her leadership, and the impact her team drives every day. What sparked your interest in this field?

Honestly, life gradually led me into the Payroll field. At the beginning, it was simply about taking an opportunity and learning something new, nothing out of the ordinary. However, over time, and through delicate situations that required accuracy and attention to detail, I developed a constant curiosity to continue learning about payroll processes, finance, treasury, compensation, human resources, and taxes.

Payroll is a complex field, full of nuances, where responsibility ultimately comes down to two key things: ensuring there is no financial impact to employees while simultaneously complying with obligations to local authorities. We work with many stakeholders, employees, companies, and government entities across different countries, which means the work is never dull. Despite its intensity, we genuinely love Payroll.

What project are you most proud of recently, and what impact did it have?

During my first year at WBD, I am especially proud of several projects that reflect our commitment to continuous improvement in both employee experience and company processes:

From Payroll, we recognized the importance of clear and timely communication. We implemented structured communications and informative sessions for annual and extraordinary processes, such as PTU sessions and annual process announcements, ensuring employees had the necessary information at the right time.

In close collaboration with P&C and Employee Connection, we successfully delivered two key projects for Mexico in under seven months. These initiatives formalized structure, timelines, and responsibilities across the end-to-end process, including guides for employees and managers, while strengthening documentation controls and improving efficiency.

How is your team contributing to WBD Mexico’s goals?

My Payroll team contributes strategically to the company’s objectives by transforming an administrative function into a driver of trust, financial efficiency, and legal compliance. We ensure accurate and timely payments because we believe this directly strengthens employee loyalty, boosts morale, and reduces turnover, all of which have a direct impact on WBD’s productivity.

At the same time, we fully understand the level of confidentiality involved in the information we manage and therefore safeguard the integrity of both our employees and the company at all times.

What surprised you most about the culture here?

When you become part of the WBD family, you realize that you shouldn't settle for anything less than what they offer you. WBD truly embraces you and offers a quality of life that, in my case, allows me to balance being a single mother while continuing my professional development.

At the same time, the company challenges you every day, fostering confidence that your efforts will be recognized. What stands out the most is the culture, how every individual is genuinely valued, making you feel comfortable and supported. You are not just an employee; you are a human being with real value.

What’s a moment that made you feel valued?

I feel valued through the trust my leaders and colleagues place in my experience, allowing me to propose ideas and resolve complex situations. Earning the confidence of strong leaders is a powerful confirmation of my value within the company.

Additionally, one aspect I deeply appreciate about WBD is the recognition given for hard work and effort. Knowing that your contribution has impact and visibility is something truly special within WBD’s culture.

What do you appreciate most about working at WBD Mexico?

With my background in payroll and benefits administration, I have seen that many companies in Mexico limit themselves to offering only what is legally required. What I truly value about WBD is that the company goes beyond compliance and seeks to provide a meaningful compensation and benefits offering.

How has your team supported your growth?

Having a highly experienced team with a consistently positive attitude is the perfect combination. Working together has taught me that complementing each other makes us stronger: while one person excels at meeting deadlines, another analyzes deeply, another brings creativity, and another focuses on continuous improvement. Being different truly works for us.

In the past, I may have sought team members with skill sets similar to mine, believing that was the ideal approach. My team at WBD proved me wrong. Now, within a foundation of trust, I can support their development while also having the space to continue improving processes and growing professionally myself. Letting go and allowing them to demonstrate their strengths has been incredibly liberating.

How have your personal experiences influenced your future vision and the projects you want to pursue?

Becoming a single mother has undoubtedly been the greatest challenge, and the greatest source of purpose in my life. Balancing work, parenting, and the responsibility of raising a child without a consistent support network has often required me to put my own well-being aside, navigating emotional and financial challenges along the way.

This reality, shared by many women, led me to reflect deeply on the gaps that still exist in structural support for single mothers. In many cases, responsibility falls disproportionately on one parent, while the other can disengage with limited consequences.

My future goal is to build a community that functions as a true support network for single mothers, one that provides access to legal and psychological support, shared resources, and real opportunities. Beyond that, I want to contribute to a broader conversation around the need for fairer laws that ensure shared responsibility and economic stability for children.

My personal objective is not only to give visibility to this reality, but to actively be part of the change, helping to create conditions where mothers are not only able to provide, but also to grow, thrive, and live with greater balance
